The weather is frigid and the days are short but there’s plenty of holiday cheer on St. Paul’s East Side.

One of our favorite things about the holidays is the wonderful opportunity to create memories with our families and friends. The East Side offers all kinds of activities for all ages.

Families with younger children can enjoy a dinner with Santa at Dayton’s Bluff Recreation Center on Thursday, December 12th. This free event is open to all ages but is geared for children 13 and under. The event includes a pasta dinner, arts, crafts and visit with Santa. Make sure you bring a camera to snap up those priceless photos!

The Holiday Lights Skate Night at Lake Phalen is a free event and fun for everyone. Hosted at the Phalen Refrigerated Ice Rink from 6:00 to 7:00 pm on Friday, January 10th, this event gives you an opportunity to ice skate under the night sky and holiday lights—They’ll be turning off the ice rink flood lights for the event. This is the perfect event for a memorable night with the family or a date night. The temperatures are sure to be chilly so be sure to warm up by the fire inside and enjoy some free hot chocolate and cookies. The number of ice skates that Phalen rec center has available are limited, so bring your own skates.

Metro Students!—don’t bail on the East Side over winter break. If you’re near campus swing into an East Side business, whether it be a coffee shop, brewery, restaurant or retail store. In this season of commercial consumption try and support a small business, a local service or a business owned by an marginalized member of our society—and please take advantage of all the free fun activities that the East Side has to offer.

Stop by The Goat House or Swede Hollow Cafe to warm up with a hot coffee, hot chocolate or tea—and don’t forget about that discount. Swing by St. Paul Brewing or 11 Wells Distillery to pick up your holiday party’s spirits. Enjoy a family supper at Tongue & Cheek, or a midday snack at Yoerg.

Happy Holidays.
